Packwood Resigns!

Well, it finally happened! Today, Senator Bob Packwood submitted his
resignation from the U.S. Senate! The Senate Ethics Committee voted
unanimously to recommend his expulsion from the Senate, as a result of
Packwood's "endeavoring to obstruct and impede the Committee's
investigation." Allegations of sexual harrassment by 17 women over a
three decade period were the original basis for the investigation, but
like Richard Nixon, Packwood made it worse by trying to hide the facts
(refusing to submit diaries, etc...) and now he is paying the
consequences.

I, for one, am glad that he is gone. I hope that the Senate can now go
through with the more serious order of business without getting
involved in another Anita Hill-like shananigan. There's no place in
the Senate for this kind of ridiculousness. Good ridance and let's
hope his replacement can do a better job of representing the State of
Oregon and the United States.
