SMTP is exactly what its name implies, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
There are no security mechinisms at all. Anyone can be set any of the
headers to anything. Hell, you can even use telnet to send mail via
SMTP. You just telnet to the SMTP socket instead of the standard
telnet socket.
