Older Driver

It seems weird to me that this old man had a "minor" accident with a
Mercedes-Benz and left the scene (was it reported?) and suddenly begins
speeding up, then smashes into all those people.  He claims it was an
accident and he mistook the gas pedal for the brake.  That is poor
control of a car and poor reaction.  He didn't even know which was his
gas and which was his brake pedals.  Mental loss of realization.

If you hit the gas pedal you realize it by the surge of speed and you
immediately take your foot off and go for the brake.   Why was he still
pressing on the gas pedal for the long, long length he did?  He was not
braking.  That is instant.
